Summary

This PR allows nodes without a primary instance to be repaired via update-database or removed via delete-database instead of failing with node <name> has no primary instance.

Changes

  • operations.UpdateNode now allows updates even when a node has no primary instance
  • activities.ResolveExecutor now allows updates even when a node has no primary instance.
  • applyEvents tolerates ErrNoPrimary for EventTypeRefresh (leaves state alone so refresh/planning can proceed) and EventTypeDelete (removes the resource from state), mirroring the existing ErrHostRemoved handling.
  • Added e2e/no_primary_recovery_test.go covering both the update-recovery and delete-on-broken-node paths.

Testing

Verification:

  1. Create DB
➜  control-plane git:(feature/PLAT-582/update-nodes-without-primary) ✗ cp1-req create-database '{
  "id": "repairtest",
  "spec": {
    "database_name": "repairtest",
    "database_users": [
      {"username": "admin", "password": "password", "db_owner": true, "attributes": ["SUPERUSER","LOGIN"]}
    ],
    "nodes": [
      {"name": "n1", "host_ids": ["host-1"]}
    ],
    "postgresql_conf": {
      "shared_preload_libraries": "pg_stat_statements,snowflake,spock"
    }
  }
}'

  1. List Database

  1. Break it — add a library that isn't installed using update-database
➜  control-plane git:(feature/PLAT-582/update-nodes-without-primary) ✗ cp1-req update-database repairtest '{

  1. Node state now

  1. Now update-database with correct spec
➜  control-plane git:(feature/PLAT-582/update-nodes-without-primary) ✗ cp1-req update-database repairtest '{
  "spec": {
    "database_name": "repairtest",
    "nodes": [{"name": "n1", "host_ids": ["host-1"]}],

📝 Walkthrough

Node updates now accept nodes without a primary instance. Workflow handling distinguishes missing-primary errors by event type. End-to-end tests cover restoring a failed database and deleting a database whose only node has no primary.

Changes: No-primary recovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update nodes without a primary
server/internal/database/operations/update_nodes.go, server/internal/database/operations/update_nodes_test.go
UpdateNode treats instances as replicas when no primary exists. It returns an error if the node has no instances. The unit test expects the instance and node resource in the resulting state.
Handle missing-primary workflow events
server/internal/workflows/activities/executor.go, server/internal/workflows/common.go, e2e/no_primary_recovery_test.go
ResolveExecutor wraps the missing-primary error in ErrNoPrimary. applyEvents removes state for delete events, leaves state unchanged for refresh events, and returns an error for other events. End-to-end tests cover recovery and deletion.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 02f44

The recovery change is mergeable with a bounded edge-case risk: an inconsistent primary assignment can be silently accepted. Validate that assignment before treating the node as having no primary.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 02f44

The recovery behavior remains scoped to the requested database and does not introduce an alternate execution target. Skipped database-level cleanup does not by itself establish a resource leak because physical teardown remains separate. Residual uncertainty concerns interrupted and multi-node recovery, rather than a demonstrated authorization bypass.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The evidenced scope is the requested database's resource graph, including its nodes, instances, replication relationships and generated host-side resources. UpdateNode consumes explicitly supplied instance resources, and executor resolution uses stored primary and host identities rather than adding a cross-database selector or alternate-host fallback.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Missing-primary recovery does not grant execution on a replica. Primary-bound activity scheduling still requires the node's explicit primary identity. The inspected database connection path also checks that execution occurs on the instance's assigned host and uses per-instance PostgreSQL TLS credentials.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Recovery retains last-known state when refresh cannot resolve a primary. Instance initialization requires renewed primary discovery, and update/delete workflows mark failures or cancellation rather than unconditionally completing. The new delete exception nevertheless deliberately relinquishes individual SQL-resource retry ownership before physical teardown, making that downstream cleanup relationship an important lifecycle invariant.
