Summary

• data.import with mode: "table_data_only" reads .xlsx files (or format: "xlsx"): each visible worksheet with cells becomes its own table, as in the desktop import. sheets limits the import to named worksheets.
• Worksheets are read and prepared one at a time. A worksheet that fails, or whose used range would exceed the 8,000,000-cell budget per file, fails as its own item before its cells are read; the others still import. Items report their sheet.
• Native import rejects .csv, .tsv and .xlsx paths and points to table_data_only.
• An import summary over 128 KiB that includes XLSX files fails with the worksheet names of each file.
