Propose starting an 8.0.x line of the plugin for Grails 8 support. This would also raise the Java baseline to 21 and upgrade Flying Saucer to 10.x.
Why these go together
Grails 8 requires Java 21
Flying Saucer 10.x requires Java 21
7.0.x stays on Java 17/Flying Saucer 9.x for maintenance.
Expected changes
Current (7.0.x)
Target (8.0.x)
Java
17
21
Grails
7.0.9
8.0.0
Gradle wrapper
8.14.3
9.7+
Groovy
4.x
5.1.3
Spring Boot
3.x
4.1.1
Flying Saucer
9.9.5
10.x
Known Grails 8 breaking change that affects us:
GrailsWebMockUtil is no longer on the production classpath. The example app's integration tests (RenderEnvironmentSpec, XhtmlDocumentServiceSpec) use it and will need it pulled in through testFixtures.
@billgonemad I see you have already made a 8.0.x branch. Please do the upgrade on a branch from that (like upgrade/grails-8.0.0) so we can merge back to 8.0.x. I will promote 8.0.x to the default branch as soon as it is released
@sbglasius I accidentally pushed the 7.0.x -> 8.-.x merge (#63) directly to the 8.0.x branch instead of through a PR. It is a clean merge with only the version conflict resolved (kept the 8.0.0-SNAPSHOT). If you would rather we undo that and create a PR, let me know and we can revert and redo.

I suggest to remove the current 8.0.x and just do a upgrade branche from 7.0.x and I'll make the 8.0.x branche when the upgrade is ready 🤗

@sbglasius I've pushed the upgrade/grails-8.0.0 branch.
