This example can be a little bit initimidating on the front page of the docs - do we need all this code for x402 quote to work?

Agreed, the front-page example was doing too much. The SDK handles the challenge, signing, paid retry and receipt validation; most of the extra code checks client limits and preserves state for recovery and withdrawals.
Updated in 0fd042b: the quickstart now shows a clearly labelled 16-line SDK setup/request excerpt, with the full runnable examples and detailed recovery/withdrawal steps on a separate linked page. The downloadable script keeps its existing spending limits, receiver checks and saved state.
The site build, type checking, standalone example compilation and 19 local payment-policy checks pass. No payments were signed or sent.

need to clarify what we mean by "CoW" here.

Changed this to “the x402 payment service” and named it as the CoW Protocol x402 payment service earlier in the guide. This identifies the service collecting charges separately from the payment token.

for clarity, would suggest using $COW to denominate when we are talking about a currency.

Updated both guides to use $COW consistently for the payment token, including the supported options, Permit2 requirement and pricing note. Verified that the dollar sign renders literally.

| Get CoW Protocol quotes from a script or agent without an API key. Deposit tokens into a prepaid channel, then authorise each quote with an off-chain signature. The deposit funds future requests; it is not an extra quote fee. CoW collects the charges in batches. |

The introduction now explicitly says “The CoW Protocol x402 payment service collects the charges in batches.” Token references use $COW.
