Extract the storage corrections identified in PR #8. S3 conditional delete drops from two requests to one; compose removes its destination HEAD. GCS invalid update tokens fail locally. Include SDK transport regressions and bounded StoreConditions controls/witnesses.

PR Summary

High Risk
Changes compare-and-swap semantics at the object-store linearization point (manifest, leases, large packs); a backend that ignores conditional headers could still corrupt shared WAL state.

Overview
Fixes a check-then-act race where conditional deletes and large multipart uploads could mutate storage after a stale version check, allowing a rival writer's object to be deleted or overwritten.

S3 now uses native If-Match on DeleteObject (replacing HEAD + unconditional delete) and applies create/update preconditions on CompleteMultipartUpload for multipart put, compose, and objects above the multipart threshold—not only overwrite uploads. Compose drops the destination HEAD before create; failed preconditions abort staged uploads with no unconditional retry. GCS rejects invalid, zero, or negative update generation tokens locally instead of treating them like create.

Docs call out If-Match / If-None-Match requirements for S3-compatible backends and just test-s3, update ROUNDTRIPS for multipart publish/checkpoint cost, and add a StoreConditions TLA+ model plus SDK-transport tests that assert rivals survive and conditions bind at the commit point.

Walkthrough

S3 conditional deletes now send If-Match, and conditional multipart operations apply their conditions at completion. Multipart uploads validate part limits and body length. GCS rejects invalid update-generation tokens and propagates validation errors.

Changes

Conditional Storage Operations

Layer / File(s) Summary
GCS generation-token validation
crates/walgit-store/src/gcs.rs
Update tokens must parse as positive generations. Invalid tokens return InvalidArgument, and upload paths propagate option-application errors.
S3 conditional delete and compose
crates/walgit-store/src/s3.rs, docs/spec/README.md, docs/spec/scratch/StoreConditions.*, docs/ROUNDTRIPS.md
Conditional DELETE sends If-Match and uses HEAD only after a failed condition. Compose applies destination conditions at multipart completion. The specification model and documentation describe conditional mutation behavior.
Conditional multipart PUT validation
crates/walgit-store/src/s3.rs, docs/ROUNDTRIPS.md
Large PUTs can use multipart uploads. The upload path validates part limits and exact body length, applies immutable cache control when requested, and applies conditions at completion. Tests cover conditional operations, aborts, and length mismatches.

On affected MinIO community deployments, a stale conditional delete can remove another writer’s object or lease. Establish and enforce compatible conditional-delete support before merging, and update the documented upload budgets.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: conditions are enforced at delete and multipart commit. The raw summary shows S3 conditional DELETE sends If-Match and multipart completion applies Create/Update conditions, which matches the title. The title is short, specific, and follows the conventional commit style.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description states the race being fixed: a rival write between the version check and an unconditional delete or multipart completion could be removed or replaced. It also says the change cherry-picks upstream PR #59 and that the upstream test fails on main and passes with this change. This relates directly to the changeset.

Versions are stored unquoted, so an unquoted If-Match is not an RFC 9110 entity-tag and a store may answer a false 412, which release treats as success and leaves the lease behind.

Add tests for the new part-count guard in multipart_put.

The guard at crates/walgit-store/src/s3.rs:857-861 rejects a zero multipart_part_size and any upload that needs more than 10,000 parts. The existing multipart test uses part size 8 with declared lengths 3 and 12, so neither branch runs. A regression that removes the guard, or changes > 10_000 to >= 10_000, would still pass the current suite.

The 10,001-part check needs a request-log assertion. The body-length mismatch path also returns StoreError::InvalidArgument, so an error-variant assertion alone cannot show that the guard fired. A guarded rejection returns before create_multipart_upload, so the check should assert that no POST ?uploads request was sent. The 10,000-part check should use part size 1 and assert that the create request was sent. That shows the guard accepted the upload without requiring 10,000 real parts.

Add tests for the part-count guard in multipart_put, covering zero part size,
rejection of a declared 10,001-part upload, and acceptance of exactly 10,000
parts. Assert that the rejected 10,001-part request returns InvalidArgument and
sends no POST ?uploads request, and that the 10,000-part case reaches the create
request; use request-log assertions to distinguish guard behavior from
body-length mismatch.

so a stale `if_version` cannot delete an object when the provider ignores
`If-Match`. Gate conditional deletes on verified provider support; since no

must not rely on versioned deletes. Do not replace the conditional delete with
HEAD followed by an unconditional DELETE.

at or below the threshold. In the Push row, clarify the multipart count applies
to each qualifying pack or idx PUT and does not cover the striped
put_file_parallel branch; update the Checkpoint row for a qualifying checkpoint
object.

…round trips

Conditional delete and multipart commit rely only on the store honouring If-Match, and large conditional PUTs cost more round trips than the budget rows showed.
