Summary

GET /api/v1/loas serves LOAs to keys holding the new read:loas scope. Each request reads the five LOA forums live, one record per thread, in the order #276 lays out:

GET /api/v1/loas[?endedSince=YYYY-MM-DD] read:loas, Cache-Control: max-age=0
endedSince more than 365 days before UTC today -> 400 (typed datastore error)
  FindLoas(now, endedSince)
visible threads in nodes 180/178/540/400/369, posted in the year before the window starts
parse each opening post as it reads now (edits win)
Start Date / End Date ([S]struck[/S] text dropped)
reason as plain text, line breaks kept
Subject = last Username label: mention id, then current username, then approved previous username
fill missing dates or reason from the form submission closest to the post time (within 5 s, that forum's forms)
classify: open / upcoming / ended (UTC calendar days, End Date inclusive)
              or needs review: DATES_UNREADABLE, END_BEFORE_START, TOO_LONG (>14 days), NO_SUBJECT, UNKNOWN_SUBJECT
window: open + upcoming, needs review posted in the last 14 days
+ with endedSince: ended on or after it, needs review posted on or after it
  {"loas": [...]} ordered by threadId

Each ticket landed as its own merge commit: #277, #279, #278, #280, #282, #281, then the code review fixes.

Some calls here aren't spelled out in the spec. They're worth a look:

  • A needs-review LOA posted more than 14 days ago is left out of the default response, even when its dates cover today. One example is a TOO_LONG LOA filed three weeks ahead. That is LOAs: return unreadable LOA threads as needs review #280's acceptance criterion as written. A sync that passes endedSince still gets it.
  • "Posted in the last 14 days" counts from midnight UTC 14 days back, so late in the UTC day it reaches almost 15 days.
  • The route parses its query strictly, like the tickets list. Broken percent-encoding anywhere in the query gets a 400.
  • When more than one member once held a previous username, the Subject is whoever held it when the thread was posted.
  • The submission fills each date on its own. A post with a readable Start Date keeps it even when its End Date comes from the submission.

Evidence

  • Before: GET /api/v1/loas is not a route, and no key can be limited to LOAs.
After: go vet ./... is clean and make test-integration passes on b5bd2a4. The datastore package ran fresh against MariaDB in 49 s.

harness last Username label wins over the Submitter's earlier label
    harness   End Date [S]Oct 16, 2026[/S] -> Oct 23, 2026     -> endDate 2026-10-23
harness Saturday to Saturday (14 days) -> OPEN
    harness   15 days                                           -> NEEDS_REVIEW / TOO_LONG
harness endedSince 365 days back ok, 366 days back -> ErrEndedSinceTooFarBack
harness post edited, stale form answer -> post's dates and reason
handler read or read:tickets key -> 403 "scope required: read:loas"
golden loas/ended_since -> one LOA in each state

Each ticket and the review fixes also ran their new rows against hand-made mutants, 105 in all, and the rows killed every one.

Merge Danger

Door: two-way

The change only adds code. The API runs no DDL and adds no index.

Blast Radius: additive

Existing routes and keys behave as before. The route answers 403 until a forum admin creates the read:loas scope row in the ApiKeyManager ACP and grants it to the leadership groups. Do that first, then deploy, then make sure each consumer's key owner is in a gated group.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an API endpoint to list leave-of-absence (LOA) records, including open, upcoming, ended, and needs-review entries.
    • Added optional endedSince filtering, with date validation and a limit of 365 days.
    • Added dedicated read:loas access; this scope grants access only to LOA routes.
  • Documentation
    • Documented the LOA endpoint, response fields, access requirements, and date-filter behavior.

A key holding read:loas gets every open and upcoming LOA. On each
request the datastore reads the visible threads posted in the five LOA
forums in the year before today, takes the dates and the last Username
label from each opening post as it reads now, and resolves the Subject
by current username, ignoring case. State counts UTC calendar days, so
an LOA is still open on its End Date. A struck-through date loses to
the new date written after it. For now, threads whose dates or Subject
can't be read are left out.

The handler passes the request instant to the datastore and answers a
read failure with a 500, never an empty list. The response carries
Cache-Control max-age=0. The spec documents the operation, the goldens
witness the 200 and the read-key 403, and the glossary lists the scope.

A Username label that holds a user mention now names the mentioned
member by id, even when the mention's text has become another member's
current username. A typed label that matches no current username
resolves through the forum's approved username changes, and the LOA
reports the member's current username. Pending and rejected changes
don't count, and a current username still wins over anyone's previous
one.

When several members renamed away from the same name, the Subject is
the member who held it when the thread was posted. That is the member
whose change away from it comes first after the post, or the one who
changed away last when every change is before it.

The test schema gains xf_username_change from production DDL with its
stock indexes.

Each LOA now carries the reason the trooper gave, read from the opening
post as it reads now. The parser opens the field at the "Reason:" label,
or at "Details" on the reservist form, and reads to the next bold label.
It strips every BBCode tag and keeps each line of the reason on its own
line. A post with no reason label gives "".

The 200 golden now shows a reason on each LOA, one of them on two lines,
and the spec describes the field.

Refs #278
Refs #276

> *This was generated by AI*
A thread the API can't take as written now comes back as
LOA_STATE_NEEDS_REVIEW instead of being left out, so a leader sees
"needs review" rather than a trooper on leave vanishing. Its
reviewReason names the rule it tripped: dates that can't be read, an
End Date before the Start Date, an End Date more than 14 days after
the Start Date, no Username label, or a label that matches no member.
A Saturday-to-Saturday LOA, 14 days exactly, is not flagged.

A needs-review LOA carries the dates the post gives and "" for the
rest. A Subject who matches no member shows the name as written with
ids of "0". Needs-review LOAs come back while their thread was posted
on or after midnight UTC 14 days before today, whatever their dates
say. Every other LOA keeps LOA_REVIEW_REASON_UNSPECIFIED.

The 200 golden gains a needs-review LOA, and the spec describes the
rules.

Refs #276

The conflict was in datastores/loapost.go, where both sides added to the
loaPost struct and added a helper after parseLoaPost. The merge keeps
#279's mention id and mentionedUser alongside #278's reason and loaReason.

Refs #278
Refs #279

> *This was generated by AI*
Brings in #279's Subject resolution by mention id and previous
username. The needs-review classification now takes the Subject from
that resolver, so a label it can't resolve comes back as
LOA_REVIEW_REASON_UNKNOWN_SUBJECT.

Refs #280

GET /api/v1/loas takes an optional endedSince=YYYY-MM-DD, also spelled
ended_since. It adds the LOAs whose End Date is on or after that UTC
date, as LOA_STATE_ENDED, and the needs-review threads posted on or
after midnight UTC on it. It only ever adds to the default window, so
open and upcoming LOAs and the last 14 days of needs-review threads
still come back. The portal can fill its 4-week and 20-week views
from one call.

The window starts on the earlier of today and endedSince, and the
one-year lookback now counts back from there. endedSince can go back
at most 365 days from today's UTC date, counted in days, not calendar
years. The datastore checks that and returns ErrEndedSinceTooFarBack,
which the handler turns into a 400. A malformed date is a 400 too, and
so is a query string whose encoding is broken, because the route now
parses its query strictly like the tickets list.

The spec documents the parameter and the 400. A new 200 golden,
loas/ended_since, holds one LOA in each state, and
loas/ended_since_too_far_back witnesses the 400.

Refs #276

> *This was generated by AI*
When an opening post gives no readable Start Date, End Date or reason,
FindLoas now takes that field from the form submission that created the
thread. Nothing stored links the two, so the match is the submission from
one of the thread's forum's forms whose submit time is closest to the
thread's post time, at most 5 seconds before or after it. Each field fills
on its own, so a date or reason the post gives always wins. The reason
answer loses its BBCode and keeps its line breaks. A thread with no
submission that close comes back as before.

The six LOA forms and their question ids are a hard-coded table, as the
forums are. testdb gains the Snog Forms submission and answer tables from
production DDL with their stock indexes, and no fixture rows.

Refs #281
Refs #276

> *This was generated by AI*
Brings in #282's endedSince window. The merge was clean. The submission
fill runs before classification and windowing, so endedSince windows LOAs
on their filled-in dates.

Refs #281
Refs #282

writeStatusJSON already logs every 5xx at Error level. The LOA handler
logged the same failure at Error first, so each outage showed twice. The
wrapped detail now goes to Info, as the tickets list does for its typed
error, and the wire message stays fixed.

Refs #276

> *This was generated by AI*
plainText repeated parseLoaPost's CRLF split and loaReason's per-line
BBCode strip and trimmed join. textLines now splits a post or answer and
strips each line once, joinLines does the join, and all three use them.
The reason text comes out the same for every post and answer.

Refs #276

> *This was generated by AI*
The node ids lived in loaForums and again in every loaForms entry. Each
form now names its LoaForum, and loaForums alone maps nodes to forums.
The thread and submission queries collect their ids with
slices.Collect(maps.Keys(...)) in place of hand-rolled loops.

Refs #276

> *This was generated by AI*
FindLoas kept the scanned threads and their parsed posts in two slices
side by side, rebuilt node, post date and post into loaGap, and passed
post and post date to resolve apart. parsedThread now holds a thread's
id, forum, post time and parsed post. fillFromSubmissions, loaSubjects
and resolve take it, and loaGap is gone.

Refs #276

> *This was generated by AI*
loaReviewReason and hasGap read nothing but a loaPost, yet sat in
loas.go and loasubmission.go. They move to loapost.go beside the type,
with loaMaxDays, which only loaReviewReason uses.

Refs #276

> *This was generated by AI*
The limit was written in five places: the datastore's constant, the
sentinel's text, the handler's 400 message and both fakes. The
datastore exports LoaMaxEndedSinceDays, which still does the check, and
the other four sites refer to it. The 400 golden's wording is
unchanged.

Refs #276

> *This was generated by AI*
- rest/loas_test.go decoded error bodies inline while
loas_ended_since_test.go had a helper. Both now read them through
errorBody, which returns the code and message, because the scope-gate
  row also checks the message.
- loa_reason_harness_test.go and loa_posts_test.go take the loas_
prefix the other LOA test files use.
- The test-only loaForm and loaRename shared names with production
types of a different shape. They are now storedLoaForm and
  usernameChangeRow.

No assertion changes.

Refs #276

> *This was generated by AI*
The test database seeds key 3, testdb.LoasAPIKey, holding read:loas,
and no test read it. A harness row now checks that it validates and
carries the scope, like the active-key row does for key 1. Seeding the
scope or key inactive, dropping or repointing its scope link, or
storing the wrong hash turns the row red.

Refs #276

> *This was generated by AI*
The three LOA enums marshal through the shared enumJSON helper, and no
test pinned its fallback, so changing what an unnamed value marshals to
stayed green. Each enum now has a case showing that 99 marshals as the
bare number, as the glossary's wire rule says. Each case also catches
its own enum's MarshalJSON being rewritten to marshal String(), which
keeps every named value and golden the same.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 175be

The LOA endpoint is ready to merge; administrators must grant the new read:loas scope to intended keys before they can access it.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 175be

The dedicated permission limits access, but missing post fields can be filled from a different submission based only on forum and posting time. This can misattribute personal leave information and potentially expose answers associated with hidden or deleted threads.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new fallback treats temporal proximity as record identity. A visible thread missing dates or a reason can inherit another submission's answers because matching checks only the target forum and a five-second timestamp window. Those answers are serialized under the visible thread's identity without verifying the submission's owner or originating thread visibility. If form logs survive hiding or deleting their source thread, this can disclose otherwise excluded personal leave information to read:loas callers. The same-forum and time restrictions constrain the scenario but do not prevent it.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — read:loas is a cross-forum grant covering qualifying LOAs from nodes 180, 178, 540, 400, and 369. FindLoas receives no caller identity or tenant parameter. Exposure includes leave reasons and dates together with thread links and subject identifiers, but not arbitrary forums or complete source models.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A read:loas caller can receive unrelated submission answers when a qualifying visible thread lacks fields and another same-forum submission is the nearest within five seconds. Deliberately inducing this also requires the ability to create or edit a suitable visible thread. Hidden-source disclosure additionally depends on retained form answers; production retention was not verified. The response contains no fallback provenance that would distinguish those answers from the visible post.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Authentication rejects missing, invalid, and inactive keys before handler execution. Route authorization checks exact scope membership: read and read:tickets do not imply read:loas. These controls constrain API recipients but do not validate fallback submission provenance.
  • observed — Direct thread retrieval enforces visible discussion state. Fallback applies a same-forum restriction and five-second proximity limit, and preserves readable dates and nonblank reasons already present in the post. None of those controls verifies that the selected submission created that thread.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Fallback selection is deterministic: it chooses the closest eligible timestamp and resolves equal distances using submission order. Determinism supports repeatability, but ambiguous matches are still accepted and one submission is not reserved exclusively for its originating thread.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Require trustworthy submission-to-thread provenance and compatible source visibility before exposing fallback answers. Where that relationship cannot be established, preserve the missing field rather than treating timestamp proximity as authority. Define separately whether deliberately removed post content may be restored from historical submissions.

Explanation

The PR meets the coding requirements in [#276]–[#282]. It adds the read:loas-gated route, live reads from the five forums, opening-post parsing, Subject resolution, plain-text reasons, form fallback, review classification, UTC windows, endedSince aliases and validation, ordering, cache control, wire types, documentation, fixtures, and tests. The current handler maps malformed dates, old dates, and datastore failures to errors. The current datastore validates the 365-day limit and applies the required open, upcoming, ended, and needs-review windows.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within [#276]–[#282]. The added models, datastore code, REST handler, OpenAPI contract, glossary, scope fixtures, test fakes, integration fixtures, and tests support the LOA endpoint. The reason ran on to the next line that opens with [B]. A post whose Start
Date label has no bold markup had its reason take in the Start Date line
and the date under it, while parseLoaPost read that same line as the Start
Date field. The reason now also ends at a Start Date label, so the parser
reads each line as one field.
